Technical inspection of two-wheelers: be careful, you only have a few days left to make an appointment before it’s too late

The technical inspection of two-wheelers will become mandatory from January 1, 2025 for certain vehicles. You only have a few days left to make an appointment!

Since April 15, the technical inspection of certain two- and three-wheelers and motor quadricycles has become mandatory, reports Thanks for the info. The deadline varies depending on their date of first registration.

Which vehicles are concerned ?

Vehicles registered before 2017, whose first registration was before April 15, had to undergo the technical inspection between April 15 and August 14, 2024. Those registered before 2017 but whose first registration was after April 15 have until December 31, 2024 to comply with this obligation.

Two-wheelers, three-wheelers and quadricycles registered in 2017, 2018 and 2019 will have to undergo this inspection in 2025. Vehicles registered in 2020 and 2021 will have until 31 December 2026 to do so.

The vehicles concerned fall into category L, with the exception of collector's vehicles (put into circulation before 1960) and competition motorcycles approved by the French Motorcycling Federation.

How to carry out the technical inspection ?

Owners of the vehicles concerned must go to an approved centre, with the original registration certificate. The cost of the inspection varies between 60 and 90 euros, depending on the region.

The results of the inspection may be as follows:

Favorable (A): No problems were found. Unfavorable (S): Major failure. Unfavorable (R): Critical failure.

If the result is favorable, the inspection is valid for 3 years. In the event of an unfavorable result, the owner will have to organize a second inspection within 2 months.

What are the risks in the event of a failure to comply ?

If the technical inspection is not carried out on time, a fine of 135 euros may be imposed, which can go up to 750 euros. In addition, the vehicle registration document may be withdrawn and replaced for 7 days, the time it takes to carry out the technical inspection.
