Amazon, Apple, Google, and Meta, to name just the most iconic. Many large companies have decided to backtrack on teleworking. After strongly encouraging this mode of organization in the midst of the pandemic, some managers are now forcing their employees to return to the office. Far from following this trend, Spotify intends to give its employees complete freedom on this point.
“Employees are not children”
Quoted by Fortune, Katarina Berg, the company’s human resources director, wants to be very clear on this subject:
You can’t spend a lot of time hiring adults and then treating them like children. We’re a company that’s been digital since birth, so why shouldn’t we give our employees flexibility and freedom ? Work isn’t a place you come to, it’s something you do.
The leader does acknowledge some challenges of remote work, however:
It’s harder, and we all struggle to collaborate in a virtual environment. But does that mean we’re going to start forcing people to come into the office as soon as the trend starts?? No.

To convince its employees to come back to the office more, the company is playing the carrot game. For example, it organizes “listening lounges” where pop stars are present. Staff are also encouraged to come back to the office as part of a special week where discussions on strategy are held.
A value long promoted at Spotify
It should be noted that remote working has always been popular at Spotify. In fact, since February 2021, the streaming giant Spotify has been implementing the “Work From Anywhere” policy. This system allows the company's employees to work remotely, on site, or in a hybrid format. The company also helps its employees adapt to remote working or pays for subscriptions in coworking spaces if necessary.
Of course, not everything is rosy within the Swedish streaming platform. Let us recall, for example, that the company announced a plan to lay off 1,500 employees in December 2023, or 17% of its workforce.
What to remember:
- After encouraging teleworking, many large companies are forcing their employees to return to the office
- This is not the case for Spotify, which prefers to give its teams freedom
- To encourage them to return to the office a little more, the company is using innovative strategies
