The year 2024 is off to a flying start for Tesla. According to local Chinese sources, the American manufacturer will launch mass production of its revamped Model Y in its Shanghai gigafactory in January. The project, codenamed “Juniper” internally, marks the first major overhaul of the electric SUV since its initial launch. An evolution that draws heavily on improvements made to the 2023 Model 3 “Highland,” while retaining the DNA that made the vehicle a success.
Tesla’s teams have been hard at work modernizing their best-seller. The first images of the vehicle, captured near the Shanghai factory, reveal a completely redesigned front end. The design evolves towards more fluid and aerodynamic lines, a change that is not limited to aesthetics. The engineers have indeed optimized the aerodynamics to improve autonomy, a crucial point for many potential buyers.

Tesla is banking on a more premium experience with a particular focus on soundproofing. Rolling noise and vibrations, the main points of criticism of the previous generation, should be considerably reduced. The manufacturer has also reviewed the ergonomics of the driving position, notably with the controversial removal of the steering wheel switches, replaced by touch controls.
Tesla is adopting a gradual approach for the launch of this new Model Y. Production will start in Shanghai, a strategic plant that supplies not only the Chinese market, but also Europe and other Asian markets. This decision is not insignificant: China represents a crucial market for Tesla, facing increasingly aggressive local competition, notably from BYD.
French motorists will have to be patient. Based on the Model 3 Highland deployment schedule, the first deliveries in France could not take place until the second half of 2025.
