The media regularly discusses the possibility of Tesla releasing its own smartphone. But in an interview with the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Elon Musk stated that Tesla is not currently developing a smartphone. And while he admits that Tesla would be well-positioned to create a new mobile platform (by referring to the software the company has created for its vehicles), Musk explained that this is not something that Tesla is interested in.

In other words, Tesla prefers to focus on other sectors, such as electric vehicles, robotaxis, or humanoids. However, during this interview, Elon Musk also added that Tesla's position could change if it were forced to market its own smartphone. For example, Tesla could start working on its own smartphone and platform if Apple or Google's behavior toward developers forced it to do so.

Competing with Android and iOS is not an easy task

In any case, it is important to note that competing with Android and iOS in the smartphone market is far from an easy task. Among the companies that have tried, there is Microsoft, which had Windows Mobile, and Samsung, which has already released smartphones using the Tizen OS instead of Android. But these groups have decided to abandon these platforms. Amazon has also tried to make a place for itself in the smartphone market with its Fire Phone device and its Fire OS platform, but it has been a bitter failure.

However, right now, one Chinese company might be about to succeed where all these digital giants have failed: Huawei. As a reminder, Huawei has developed its own operating system, called Harmony OS. And while the first version was still tied to Android, Huawei has created a new version called Harmony OS Next that cuts those ties and no longer supports Android apps.

  • Rumors regularly circulate about the “Tesla smartphone”
  • But recently, Elon Musk has indicated that his company is not interested in this market, even though Tesla is well positioned to develop an alternative to Android and iOS
  • However, Musk has also indicated that Tesla could launch its own platform and smartphone if it were forced to
