Test of the Huawei MateBook 14 (2024): the Chinese brand is far from having said its last word in France

It's no secret that Huawei is facing certain difficulties since the American sanctions imposed on it. Only, with the release of the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra which is the best camera phone of this year as well as the arrival of Google applications through Aurora, the Chinese giant is regaining momentum.

A rise that had already started when Huawei had the idea of diversifying by offering a slew of solid laptop PCs, joined today today by the Huawei MateBook 14 of 2024. So here's what we think of this new iteration of MateBook.

A simple and elegant design

The design of the MateBook 14 is both stylish and functional. With its aluminum chassis and its careful finish, it evokes a pebble shape with a soft and rounded appearance. The 14″ size will help it fit into any backpack. It is as light as it is compact, weighing only 1.31 kg and measuring 14.5 mm thick.

Despite the fact that our test unit was sent to us with a QWERTY format keyboard, it is pleasant to use. Note that it has two levels of white backlighting, remaining quite discreet even at the highest setting. The imposing touchpad offers a pleasant glide, with great precision and a satisfying click.

We will also appreciate that the MateBook's power button retains its specific function for the series. Indeed, it integrates a fingerprint sensor, offering biometric security that is as quick as it is practical in order to unlock the machine.

There is still one aspect of the design that surprised us with this new version of the MateBook 14. In order to adopt the round aesthetic of the PC, the screen of it it is decorated with rounded edges. A choice which causes a few pixels to be lost in the 4 corners of the panel, and which can sometimes be confusing. The fact remains that this decision gives an even more sympathetic look to the design of Huawei's MateBook 14. Let's talk about this famous screen together here.

An original OLED and touch panel

One of the strong points of the MateBook 14 is undoubtedly its 14.2-inch OLED screen. With a resolution of 2880 × 1920 pixels and a refresh rate of 120 Hz, this screen has everything you need to provide a quality visual experience.

Let's say almost early, sinceits maximum brightness of 450 nits ensures clear visibility indoors, but completely insufficient outdoors. A rather limiting point for those who would like to telework with the machine in a sunny situation.

In return, the panel supports 100% of the sRGB and DCI-P3, as well as 95% of the Adobe RGB gamut. Wide color coverage that is particularly useful for content creation professionals, such as photographers.

In addition, the touchscreen is compatible with Huawei's M-Pencil, adding an extra dimension for users who prefer to draw or take notes by hand.

Sufficiently powerful and responsive

Le MateBook 14 is powered by an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor, coupled with 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. During our tests, this allowed us to handle demanding tasks without problems, such as editing photos using Photoshop for example. It has effective thermal management, where the MateBook remains pleasant to use in all circumstances, all in significant silence.

As for the graphics part, the Huawei PC is equipped with the Intel Arc A350M card. This is a graphics solution that is not designed for intensive gaming, but is sufficient for light games and moderate tasks. Once again, no problems in Photoshop here, while maintaining a certain autonomy.

A champion in the autonomy category

Battery life is a crucial criterion for an ultrabook, and the MateBook 14 does not disappoint in this area. With its 70 Wh battery, our tests showed possible use of the MateBook for a day and a half of work, all with a brightness of 75% of the screen. An excellent result for the PC whose energy consumption is particularly low.

The MateBook 14 comes with a 65W USB-C charger, capable of recharging the battery from 5% to 100% in approximately 75 minutes.

A selection of hungry ports

In terms of connectivity, the MateBook 14 offers very few ports. It only has one USB-C port, two USB-A ports, one HDMI port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The laptop supports Wi-Fi 6, providing fast and stable connection speeds, as well as Bluetooth 5.1 for enhanced wireless connectivity with peripherals like headphones or a wireless mouse.

Not exactly an ideal design for audio and webcam

The MateBook 14 is equipped with two microphones and two speakers. The latter are unfortunately rather poorly located, being on the lower hull. This therefore results in a muffled sound when it is used in a context other than on a desk.

The webcam is located at the top of the screen offering decent image quality for video conferencing. As far as privacy is concerned, however, we regret the fact that Huawei only offers to deactivate its camera software, without a dedicated button or even better, using a webcam cover.

This 2024 edition of the Huawei MateBook 14 stands out with its beautiful OLED screen, solid performance and excellent battery life. It combines elegance and functionality in a portable design, ideal for professionals wishing to use it for teleworking.

Despite a few small flaws, the MateBook 14 is a particularly balanced ultrabook, offering both power, portability and first-rate autonomy. The MateBook 14 is seriously worth considering, as Huawei has once again managed to deliver an excellent laptop currently available for 1399 euros.
