The Society of Letters, Sciences and Arts of Lozère awards this prize each year to a Lozère resident who distinguishes himself or herself.

The administrators of the Société des lettres have made their choice for the Degas 2024. They have decided to award the 14th Degas to the young Lozère scientist Roman Chabanon.

A native of Mende, after completing his primary and secondary studies there, at the Bourrillon college and then at the Chaptal high school, Roman Chabanon went to the INSA (National Institute of Applied Sciences) in Toulouse, to become a biochemical engineer.

Targeted therapy

After several international experiences, he chose to specialize in the medical world, more precisely in cancer research. After London, he returned to the Gustave-Roussy center in Paris, a European reference in the fight against cancer.

Author of a thesis on targeted therapy molecules, he worked on their potential to activate the immune system. The scientific community and now patients know how much immunotherapy has revolutionized treatment protocols, results and comfort.

Advances in medicine

Already distinguished in 2020 by the Bettencout-Schueller Foundation and by the Pink Ribbon in 2023, it seemed important and judicious to the administrators of the Société des lettres that Lozère honor, albeit in a different way, the decisive contribution of one of its own to medical research. He completes the long list of Lozère scientists who over the centuries have contributed to advances in medicine.

His prize will be presented to him in Mende, Monday, December 30. It is Professor Moshe Yaniv, member of the Academy of Sciences, internationally renowned molecular biologist, himself winner of the Degas in 2019 and since then full member of the Société des lettres de la Lozère, who will present it to him in the presence of the members of the Society, his family and local authorities.
