It is well known that the media never talk about trains arriving on time. So much so that following the news can be totally depressing. Without denying the major threats and difficulties that our times are going through, there is also very good news that sometimes reaches us and is not relayed enough. Ignoring it is condemning ourselves to despair. Here are three recent pieces of news that put a smile back on our faces.

A major step forward in access to education

According to UNESCO data, the number of children who are not in school has fallen from 390 million in 2000 to 244 million in 2023, a decrease of almost 40%. This is all the more impressive given that the global child population has grown over this period.

As Our World In Data notes, despite this good news, progress has stalled over the past five years. In detail, while girls were significantly more likely to be enrolled in school than boys, the gap has narrowed, although the data broken down by gender has not been updated since 2019.

Drop in pollution is having a dramatic impact

A new report looks at the impact of air pollution globally. The authors note that ambient PM2.5 levels are decreasing or stabilizing in many regions. As a result, and since 2000, the burden of disease linked to household air pollution has tended to decrease by 36%. This is particularly marked in China and South Asia, the experts note.

Elena Craft, president of the Health Effect Institute (HEI), points out: “Air pollution has enormous repercussions on health. We know that improving air quality and global public health is practical and achievable.

China's Progress on Carbon Emissions

The Middle Kingdom is expected to see a drop in its carbon dioxide emissions this year. This is the first time since 2016, our colleagues at Bloomberg report. This gives hope that the country’s emissions peaked in 2023 and will only continue to fall in the years to come.
