A new study published in the American magazine Mental Floss has just ranked different cities around the world according to their beauty. While this data, which is very subjective, can be difficult to assess, the experts behind this ranking wanted to give it as much scientific aura as possible, using rational data to fix the positions.

Thus, the researchers at the Online Mortgage Advisor analyzed hundreds of cities in search of the golden ratio. This ratio of proportion, known for hundreds of years, is widely used in architecture in particular. Many people give it a certain aesthetic appeal.

We find the golden ratio in particular in several famous constructions such as that of the architect Le Corbusier. The painter Salvador Dali was also a great admirer of the proportions offered by the golden ratio. He did not hesitate to slip it into his paintings to make them “more beautiful”.

The surprise of this ranking is to be found in 9th place. You have to wait until the end of the Top 10 to find the trace of a French city, but contrary to our expectations, it is not Paris, the City of Lights, which is in the spotlight. The French capital is doubled by another big and beautiful city of the hexagon Bordeaux. The city of wines in fact collects a beauty score of XXX%. It is still quite far from Venice, the first city in the ranking with a score of 83.3%.

The rest of the Top 10 includes many European capitals and major cities. Note that the only non-European city in this ranking is New York. The Big Apple occupies the 5th position, wedged between Prague, 78.7% and Athens 77.5%.

Paris and Florence outside the top 10

As for Paris, you have to wait until the 12th position to find any trace of the City of Light. The French capital, although renowned worldwide for its magnificent buildings, failed to score points in this purely mathematical ranking.

Another notable absentee from this top 10 is the Italian city of Florence. A true jewel of Tuscany, it is even the origin of an eponymous syndrome. Some tourists can be disoriented by all the monuments visible in the city. An avalanche of beauty in a way. Despite everything, Florence is only 13th in this ranking with a score of 73.6% (the same as Tel Aviv).

Strasbourg in the top 20

The last French city in this ranking, Strasbourg occupies 20th position with a score of 69.1%. For comparison, the Alsatian capital does better than Dubai 67.6%, Miami or Beijing (respectively 63 and 55.6%).
