The Bloc Québécois will take stock Tuesday morning of the ultimatum it issued to the minority Liberal government in the House of Commons, even though its conditions were not met before the end of the deadline.
The sovereignist party had given the Liberals until Tuesday to pass two bills, on the protection of supply management and on an increase in the Old Age Security pension for seniors aged 65 to 74.
200% Deposit Bonus up to €3,000 180% First Deposit Bonus up to $20,000However, neither has become law.
The one on supply management, numbered C-282, has passed all the stages in the House of Commons and is supported by the government. However, it is still under study in the Senate.
The other, numbered C-319, would increase the Old Age Security pension for seniors under 75. However, it is not supported by the liberals.
“If these two bills are not established as irreversible laws on October 29, 2024, the Bloc Québécois will undertake […] discussions with the other oppositions with a view to overthrowing the government,” declared Bloc leader Yves-François Blanchet on September 25.
In order to take stock of the situation, Mr. Blanchet will meet with journalists on Tuesday morning. He is scheduled to hold a press briefing at 11 a.m. in the House of Commons.
On Monday, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said he was prepared to work with the Bloc Québécois to bring down the Trudeau government, saying he was prepared to “work with anyone to trigger an election.”
A federal election must be held no later than October 20, 2025, but the minority Liberal government could fall at any time.
Since the start of the fall parliamentary session, the Liberals have survived two confidence votes proposed by the Conservatives, as both the Bloc and the New Democratic Party voted against bringing down the government.
