They are now indispensable during our online conversations. But emojis are much more than just funny little pictograms used to express an emotion. They would indeed reveal our personality and our state of mental health according to a new study.

Published in the journal Psychological Reports, the latter brought together 222 participants from the University of Chester in the United Kingdom and volunteers from the Prolific Academic platform.

They first completed a questionnaire to measure their levels of anxiety, depression and prosocial behaviour (openness towards others in order to improve their well-being). Their Big 5 personality traits (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism) and their use of emojis were also recorded.

What are the results ?

In detail, a correlation was established between agreeableness and the frequency of emoji use. Similarly, prosocial behaviors, extraversion, and agreeableness lead to overuse of positive emojis, which seems relatively logical.

Emotional stability also appears to be linked to lower use of emojis. Finally, people with good mental health surprisingly reported preferring negative emojis.

Essential emojis at work ?

As a reminder, a survey conducted by Slack in 2022 in France showed how emojis have made a place for themselves in the professional world. In fact, 63% of respondents said they felt unfinished when they sent a message without one of these pictograms.

As Moitree Banerjee, professor at the University of Chichester, explained to Digital Trends in April 2020: : “Emoticons allow recipients to correctly understand the level and direction of the emotion of their interlocutor. In addition to conveying attitude, emojis can also reassure the receiver.”.

If you want to dig a little deeper into this subject, we invite you to reread this article written in full confinement here. Do you share these employees' views on emojis?? Let us know in the comments.

What to remember:

  • Emoticons are widely accepted
  • They are essential for conveying emotion from a distance
  • Their use also gives real indications about your personality and your state of mental health
