Michel Ros has been working as a court usher at the criminal court for nearly 15 years. In concrete terms, he calls the cases entered on the court roll when the case is ready to be judged. Thus, he calls the defendants to appear at the bar and appear before the judges. But behind what would appear to be a simple job, his task is much more complex and requires checking that the defendant has a lawyer and that the latter is available. Sometimes, this usher is required to telephone the lawyers to ensure their presence when they are at the same time pleading before another formation of the court of appeal, for example. The court usher also checks that the persons summoned, such as the civil parties, are present or represented.

Court Policing

Sometimes, the usher's work is colossal when major trials are organized with dozens of civil parties and numerous defendants. The usher also ensures the link with the public prosecutor's office and the clerk in the case of immediate appearance hearings where Michel Ros notifies the court of the arrival of new files. A little-known but very demanding job. And this is all the more so since the usher is also responsible for implementing the court policing ordered by the presiding judge of the criminal court. In other words, he ensures that no one in the audience disrupts the proceedings or uses their mobile phones. In some cases, on the orders of the president or the prosecutor, he has had to seize the mobile phones of people who filmed part of the trial.
