The Diplomat: Netflix's series is back for a season 2, here's everything you need to remember

Spread the love

Netflix's political series starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell returns for a second season on October 31. But do you remember the plot well??

Among the good surprises that we didn't expect in 2023 on Netflix, there was The Diplomat. This political thriller followed the first steps of Kate Wyler, a diplomat specializing in the Middle East, in the role of American ambassador to London, as an international crisis breaks out and she must defuse it at all costs.

With this program, Netflix offered a series full of twists and turns on power games but also on marriage. Praised by critics and audiences, The Diplomat a year later, it landed a season 2, released online on October 31, 2024. But before launching the six new episodes, do you remember the plot of the first season well ? If not, we'll recap everything below, obviously with spoilers.

Season recap 1 de The diplomat

In the first season of The Diplomat released in 2023, diplomat Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) finds herself propelled to the post of American ambassador to the United Kingdom, even though she has no appetite for the political game. Above all, an international crisis is playing out when she has just arrived: a British aircraft carrier has been attacked near the Iranian coast.

Throughout the season, Kate Wyler must build alliances to assert herself in her position, prevent the situation from escalating with a war-mongering British Prime Minister, all the while uncovering the real culprit behind the attack. What she also doesn't know at first is that her appointment as ambassador is actually a test to see if she has what it takes to become the next Vice President of the United States.

All this while managing her eventful private life: her marriage in crisis with Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), a former ambassador who does not seem ready to hangs up and meddles a little too much in his work, his budding romantic attraction to British Foreign Secretary Dennison (David Gyasi).

That's a lot for one season, and the first season finale turns out to be explosive. While the attack on the British aircraft carrier appears to be the work of Iran, then Russia (the attack was reportedly carried out by a certain Lenkov, leader of a group of Russian mercenaries), the finale reveals that the real instigator would be the British Prime Minister himself, Nicol Trowbridge!

But no time to digest this revelation, since the final episode of season 1 ofThe Diplomat ends with an explosion. The lives of four key figures are threatened: the deputy British Merritt Grove, American embassy agent Ronnie Buckhurst (Jess Chanliau), deputy head of mission Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh) and Kate's husband Hal. Did they survive ?? Who attacked them ?? nbsp;Response in season 2 of The diplomat.

If her professional life is hectic and her career could even be compromised, Kate Wyler must also deal with her husband, Hal, a former ambassador who is still too involved and for whom his wife is not always an ally, but a competitor.
