The Gard Department continues its efforts towards the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service

During the vote on the 2025 preliminary budget on Friday, January 10, the Gard departmental council highlighted the essential role of firefighters, which was appreciated by the representatives of the management of the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service present in the audience. The Department wants to actively participate in the fight against and prevention of forest fires and floods.

“I want to highlight the commitment of the SDIS du Gard throughout the year and in particular to the victims of the Mayotte cyclone”, indicated in particular the president of the Gard departmental council Françoise Laurent-Perrigot. 28 Gard firefighters participated in the first detachment since December 16. They made it possible to set up a 3,000 square meter Escrim field hospital with around thirty tents near the Mamoudzou hospital center.

A new team of 46 firefighters and medical staff, including 29 from Gard, also left for this French department on Saturday, December 28. ESCRIM was able to treat 3,500 victims. From Saturday, January 11, another rotation of human resources left Gard to provide assistance to Mahoran victims on site.

€5.9 million in investments in 2025

To also work throughout the year in Gard with citizens, the SDIS received an envelope of €5.9 million as part of the investments in the departmental council budget voted on Friday. This will allow the acquisition of vehicles and technical equipment, to modernize the fleet.

Departmental councilor and president of the SDIS, Alexandre Pissas recalled the effort: “Never has the Department contributed so much in recent years to the SDIS.” He thus recalled the signing of the multi-year agreement of July 24, 2023, which runs until 2028. This allows the recruitment of ten professional firefighters each year. The sum of €1.5 million was announced during the council meeting for the hiring of firefighters.

The SDIS operating budget requires funding of €54.2 million. The municipalities must also contribute to this effort, which leads to some tensions over the distribution of this aid.
