It would be a lie to write that this Tuesday, December 31, 2024 was unlike any other Saturday or Sunday of the year. The aisles of the market halls were bustling with activity (except in front of the fishmonger stalls where the lobster tails were every bit as good as human tails) while people happily refreshed themselves with their weekly gossip with a glass in their hand inside or outside the temple of Nîmes gastronomy.

Seated in front of delightful charcuterie and bottles of local wine, their eyes sheltered from the bright sunshine of this December 31 by tinted glasses, Alexandra, Maurice and their gang met up for the“last aperitif of 2024. It's a tradition in our group of friends. The aperitif of December 24 at the Comptoir des Halles, the last aperitif of the year… We love getting together in this atmosphere among ourselves”, explains Alexandra.

A crab is worth two, you'll have it

“The idea is obviously not to get drunk this afternoon. But the pretext of the last races is a great opportunity to get together with friends”. The lovers celebrate the transition to 2025 with their family, with their children. Aperitif, games, and… raclette! “The feasts are planned for the 1st. Rack of lamb and risotto by me, among others”, assures Maurice.

In the belly of Nîmes, people are busy, but sparingly. If the stallholders are far from twiddling their thumbs, the human tide is not in sight, except in front of the fishmongers, where shellfish and crustaceans do not last long. “It's a tradition at our house. The Christmas period when we eat meat with foie gras, poultry and other delights, at the Durieu's for the 31st it's seafood and champagne”, explains Nancy who is waiting in line, crossing her fingers that the two crabs they covet don't end up in the neighbor's saucepan before bursting out laughing: “At worst we'll fall back on lobster”.
