Laura Palestini represents LaSalle on the municipal council of the City of Montreal after having served four terms as councilor of this borough, boasts her biographical note provided by the party. The announcement of this candidacy was made by press release on Friday afternoon.

The Liberal Party did not hold a nomination race for this riding, even though several other supporters had publicly expressed their interest in wearing the party's colors.

A vote must be held in this Montreal constituency no later than September 16, in order to fill the seat left vacant by the departure of the former Minister of Justice, David Lametti. The Prime Minister has until July 30 to launch the race.

The New Democratic Party (NDP) is fielding another municipal councilor in this riding. This is Craig Sauvé, elected in the South-West borough since 2013. The Bloc Québécois and the Conservative Party of Canada have still not announced their candidate.

About a hundred other independent candidates could also be in the race, the result of the efforts of a group that challenges the current voting system. This would have the effect of complicating Elections Canada's task and forcing the production of oversized ballots.

Experts estimate that the race in LaSalle-Émard-Verdun represents a important test to measure Justin Trudeau's support in Quebec, after his party was forced to mourn the loss of Toronto Castle – St. Paul's in the hands of Pierre Poilievre's Conservatives on June 24.

More details will follow.
