Porté actuellement par moins d’une dizaine de membres, il est encore adossé au Lions club Montpellier La Seranne mais son investissement local est grandissant.

Its precise name is still “Lions club Lunel Terre de Camargue – branch”. To this day, in fact, the Lunel service club is in the process of being reborn and is not yet formally a Lions club. Having been at a standstill for two years, it was nevertheless quickly put back on its feet by a handful of volunteers. There are 8 volunteer members to date, first and foremost the new president Catherine Cordier. “I dreamed that one day there would be a mixed Lions club in Lunel. So, when the previous one stopped, I jumped at the chance”, she says.

A branch of the Montpellier La Serrane Lions Club

A resident of Lunelloise for 34 years, she had been a member of a mixed Montpellier Lions Club for 15 years. Supported by a few friends, she decided to relaunch the Lunelloise structure with the firm determination to reach 20 members. A figure synonymous with the title of full-fledged Lions Club. At this stage, it is a branch of the Montpellier La Seranne Lions Club. A support that does not prevent Catherine Cordier from emphasizing “total independence in terms of both initiatives and finances” of the local club.

The quest for a lasting commitment

Moreover, the president does not want to rush things to reach 20 members and specifies a few prerequisites for all those who would like to give their time and join the current team: “You have to want to be a volunteer, have a little time and pay a monthly fee.” But Catherine Cordier especially encourages potential “candidates” to think before starting the process: “The goal is not to join the Lions and then leave in three months. We want the commitment to be long-term. Being a Lion requires that you be at least assiduous at monthly meetings and not come thinking you are defending personal interests. It is also possible to come and see us during our actions and why not come and help us without necessarily being a member.”

Past and future actions

A remark that is timely since the young Lions club Lunel Terre de Camargue – branch is teeming with ideas. A stakeholder in the Food Bank collection campaign last year, the club was also at the origin of a collection of glasses under the aegis of the internal Lions system called Medico Lions. The idea is to give a second life to glasses that are no longer used and to send them to countries that need them.
That's not all. Also present at the start of the school year at the associations' forum, the volunteers of the local club were mobilized, just a few days ago, as part of a diabetes screening day at the Super U in Lunel and it is launching its 2nd “Christmas Boxes” campaign these days. “Until December 12, we are setting up a collection of Christmas Boxesl (read below) intended to be offered to the beneficiaries of Secours Catholique and Secours Populaire”, explains Catherine Cordier.

On December 15, the Lions on the Lunel market

In addition, on December 15, the Lions will be present at the Lunel market for an action called “30,000 apples”. Carried out in partnership with the Saint-Justoise Cofruid’Oc cooperative, it consists of selling bags of apples, the proceeds of which will be donated to guide dog associations to help finance the cost of the animal throughout its 10 years of activity with the visually impaired. Finally, Catherine Cordier and her team are already preparing actions for the spring, in particular a charity evening at the Brassens hall with a concert by Hervé Acosta…

What else you need to know

Christmas boxes. To participate in the Christmas Box operation organized by the Lions club Lunel Terre de Camargue – branch until December 12, the principle is simple. All you have to do is put in a box: a hat or scarf, a toiletries product, a food product, a gift and a personalized Christmas card, wrap the box in wrapping paper and drop it off at the Nine boutique at 128 rue de la Libération. Lions Club volunteers will collect the boxes and give them to Secours Catholique et Populaire. Last year, some 39 boxes were collected. A record to beat.
Lions. The Lions Club International was created in 1917. It is the first and only NGO to hold a seat at the UN. In France, the Lions have 21,000 members. To date, the Lions Club Lunel Terre de Camargue – branch has 8 members including 5 from Lunel, 1 from Montpellier, 1 from Castelneuvien and 1 from Aimarguois.
