The mayor of Saint-Julien-de-Peyrolas deplores the lack of consultation regarding the departure of doctors to Pont-Saint-Esprit

It was through the press that Claude Salau discovered that the general practitioners established in his town were the doctors announced for July 2025 in Pont-Saint-Esprit. For him, this does not change anything “to the problem of access to care”. For his part, the mayor of Pont-Saint-Esprit explains that this is a necessary step in the creation of a Health Center.

“This is not a nice Christmas present for Saint-Julien-de-Peyrolas.”The mayor of the commune, Claude Salau, is outraged. The population of his commune and the surrounding villages are also outraged. On Tuesday evening, at the Pont-Saint-Esprit municipal council, Mayor Valère Segal announced the arrival of three doctors, or even four, in July 2025 in the premises of Cazerne Pépin (read here). However, the doctors in question are the three general practitioners who practice in Saint-Julien-de-Peyrolas. Hence the anger and regrets of the mayor of Saint-Julien-de-Peyrolas over the “lack of consultation. I am convinced that we could have found solutions […]. If their choice to settle in this town is perfectly legitimate, being liberal health professionals, this does not change the problem of access to care for the inhabitants of the surrounding rural towns, he wrote in a press release on Thursday.

“This shifts the problem”

Reached by telephone this Friday morning, Claude Salau specified: “It's a change of address. They leave with their patients and are already overbooked.” The mayor is worried about his constituents “often without means of transport or in a difficult economic situation, they already struggle to access local medical care. Moving the problem from Saint-Julien-de-Peyrolas to Pont-Saint-Esprit risks complicating the situation even more”.
The surprise is all the more abrupt since the councillor had questioned the doctors in the spring on their vision of the future, and they had responded that they wanted to stay in the village. At the same time, Claude Salau had received approval from the Department for the construction of a residence of eight inclusive housing units because there was a medical practice nearby. The first stone of this project will be laid in January.
Claude Salau found out about the doctors' move through the press. He was not invited to the discussions. While “questions of access to care require a collective and concerted approach”, he emphasizes, referring to the project of the previous Spiripontaine majority to join the “My Region, My Health” scheme which planned “the arrival of two doctors without patients in the fall of 2024” in the premises of the Pont-Saint-Esprit hospital.

For Valère Segal, “a step forward for the canton”

Reached on the morning of Friday, December 20, the mayor of Pont-Saint-Esprit shares: “I have an appointment with the mayor of Saint-Julien this afternoon. He is very disappointed. Which I understand.” For Valère Segal, “we need to work at the territorial level. We discussed it with the CPTS Vallis Bona[territorial professional health community bringing together health professionals from the twenty-four municipalities in the canton]. This is a step forward for the entire canton. They are the ones who made the request to me because their premises had become too cramped, particularly for receiving interns. A doctor needs two rooms: the nurse begins the assessment in the first room… This makes it possible to lighten the doctor's workload so that he can receive more patients.” The mayor of Pont-Saint-Esprit also defends himself by specifying: “This is a real step forward. With them, we will create a large health center” . For Valère Segal, this step is necessary “to attract other professionals. To create a health center, you need general practitioners”.
As for the mobility issue, Valère Segal mentions the project led by the Agglo of bus rotations between cities and villages for people who cannot travel. A project that should be deployed in spring 2025.
