The MWC has decided: here are the best smartphones of 2023

The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona is an opportunity for many brands to present their latest innovations, or even to launch new products. This major tech show also has a tradition of distributing awards. And for the 2024 edition of MWC, Google won the “smartphone of the year” award, thanks to the Pixel 8 series presented in fall 2023.

The news was announced by Rick Osterloh, the head of Google devices and services, in a post on X. In the post, he congratulated his team, and thanked the Google Pixel device user community.< /p>

“The Best Smartphone Award combines exceptional performance, innovation and leadership, determined by the evaluation of smartphones on the market between January 2023 and December 2023 , by world-renowned independent analysts, journalists and influencers”, indicates the MWC website, regarding this award.

Google Pixel: slowly but surely

In any case, this is an important price for Google Pixel, as it continues to progress internationally. Other nominated products were:

• The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
• The OnePlus Open/OPPO Find N3
• The Galaxy S23 series
• The Galaxy Z Flip 5

In other words, the Pixel 8 series competed with excellent smartphones. Otherwise, it should be noted that Google's Pixel smartphones are currently enjoying a strong increase in sales. For the moment, Google is not in the global Top 5 in the smartphone market. But in recent years, sales have reportedly seen double-digit growth. Furthermore, since the launch of the first Google Pixel in 2016, sales were close to 40 million units in October.

On the other hand, Google's latest quarterly results also suggest that the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro sold well. For the moment, Google does not reveal data on smartphone sales in its financial results. However, revenues generated by the “Subscriptions, platforms, and devices” category, which includes Pixel smartphones, increased by 22.7% year-on-year in the last quarter of 2023.

In any case, Google's strategy is bearing fruit. At the start of 2023, the firm announced good results for the Pixel family of devices, in 2022, despite a difficult context. And this would have encouraged the firm to continue investing in its smartphone brand.
