Since its creation in 2002, HDMI technology has continued to evolve. And as expected, the HDMI Forum, which manages the standard, took advantage of CES in Las Vegas to make the new version official: HDMI 2.2. And the major new feature will be the increase in bandwidth. Indeed, while HDMI 2.1 had 48 Gbps, HDMI 2.2 offers 96 Gbps.

Thanks to this improvement, future HDMI 2.2 cables will be able to carry more information and allow higher resolutions or higher refresh rates, knowing that thanks to the 48 Gbps of HDMI 2.1b, it is already possible to obtain 4K images at 120 fps, or 8K at 60 fps. According to an article from The Verge, “Ultra96” certified cables could support 4K resolution at 480 fps or 8K at 240 fps.

A cable capable of carrying more information

“This new specification is part of the rapid evolution of new technologies and new products arriving on the markets today and in the #8217;future”, explains Chandlee Harrell, president of the HDMI Forum.

The forum is thinking about technologies like mixed reality as well as commercial applications, like digital displays or medical imaging. In addition to that, HDMI 2.2 also includes a technology called Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) that will improve the synchronization between audio and video.

The specification is coming

The next step will be the industry adoption of this new version of HDMI, which is expected to happen gradually. Indeed, you will need to have a cable, but also devices that support this new version of HDMI, not to mention the content.

The specification will be available to companies that want to adopt it, from the first half of 2025.

  • As expected, the HDMI forum made HDMI 2.2 official during CES in Las Vegas
  • This new version of the technology allows for a bandwidth of 96 Gbps, which will increase resolutions and refresh rates
  • The new specification, which will be available this first half of the year, must now be adopted by the industry
