Even though the situation has improved significantly since the peaks of 2020 and 2021, the SARS-CoV-2 virus continues to circulate around the world and cause illness and death. According to the WHO, the virus continues to kill around 1,700 people per week globally. In total, 7 million victims have been recorded since the appearance of the virus in Wuhan (China) in 2019.

Many scientists fear the appearance of future viruses more virulent than COVID 19. Zoonetic viruses (such as the H5N1 virus), RNA viruses or laboratory accidents, some experts believe that COVID-19 is not a threat. was just a taste of what could await us in the coming years. Yuen Kwok-yung, a respected infectious disease doctor, is one of them. According to him, a new pandemic is inevitable, and this one will far surpass the global COVID crisis.

Towards a new global health crisis

Professor Yuen Kwok-yung played a very important role during the SARS crisis in 2003, since it was thanks to his work that we succeeded in isolating this virus. He is therefore rather well placed to paint this bleak picture. The researcher augurs a potentially calamitous future for our species if draconian measures are not promptly implemented.

Currently working at Queen Mary Hospital, it was here that he said: “ The general public and leaders must admit that a new pandemic will arise, and probably sooner than we think ”. This alarming assertion is based on his analysis of climatic and geopolitical upheavals which, according to him, considerably exacerbate the risks of dissemination of infectious pathogens.< /p>

Faced with this imminent threat, the scientist urges decision-makers to transcend purely national or regional considerations. He argues for a rethinking of policy priorities, calling for an urgent focus on what he calls “global existential threats.” ;”, the only approach capable, in his eyes, of preventing a health disaster of unprecedented scale. A warning from his autobiography My Life in Medicine: A Hong Kong Journey.

Un call to action: prevention before cure

Faced with this imminent danger, Professor Yuen Kwok-yung advocates a concerted and universal response. “This is something so important that we should not ignore it» he explains. Professor Yuen's expertise, forged in the crucible of the SARS and COVID-19 crises, highlighted the need for proactive measures and international synergy in the management of health crises.

Yet, despite the titanic efforts deployed in Hong Kong, where very strict containment and quarantine protocols were applied, the territory was unable to escape the virus. Nearly three million cases of COVID-19 have been recorded there and 13,800 people have died there.

Of course, it is impossible to predict accurately when and how the next pandemic will occur, or how severe it will be. However, experts like Yuen Kwok-yung agree on one thing: it's not a question of if it will happen , but from when it will happen.

  • Yuen Kwok-yung warns that a new pandemic, worse than COVID-19, is inevitable.
  • The risks of future pandemics are compounded by climatic and geopolitical upheavals.
  • It therefore calls for a concerted and international response, essential to prevent this future health crisis.
