#PYRÉNÉES-ORIENTALES – Full of white and full of people. The resorts of the Pyrénées-Orientales posted record attendance this past weekend. The figures speak for themselves: 12,178 skiers in Formiguères, Porté-Puymorens and Cambre d’Aze; an average of 9,000 skiing fans per day in Les Angles and 12,479 in Font-Romeu-Pyrénées 2000 on Sunday 29 December, something never seen before in the resort’s history according to its managers. According to professionals, “there is a desire for snow” that the second week of vacation already confirms before New Year's Eve.

Nîmes becomes a low-emission zone on January 1st

#GARD – After Montpellier, it's Nîmes' turn. The city is implementing a low-emission mobility zone (ZFE-m) perimeter from Wednesday, January 1, 2025, to meet the requirements of the Climate and Resilience Act and limit pollution. Any owner of a vehicle registered for the first time after 1996 can apply for a Crit'air sticker to drive or park within the perimeter of the Nîmes ZFE-m. It covers the entire city, but access to the Carémeau hospital and economic activity zones will be permitted. Finally, low mileage drivers (8,000 km per year) with a vehicle registered before 1996 will be able to benefit, under certain conditions, from an exemption.

Wolf suspected near Montpellier

#HÉRAULT – The head of the forestry department of the departmental directorate of Territories and the Sea is categorical: it was indeed a wolf that attacked the sheep in Saint-Bauzille-de-Montmel, 25 km from Montpellier. On the morning of Friday, December 27, two animals were discovered dead. The two breeders say they have found seven ewes and lambs killed since mid-October. According to the French Biodiversity Office of Hérault, the presence of the wolf is “not ruled out”. A concept that opens the way to compensation without however erasing the doubt that remains in most attacks on herds. As a result, the wolf, whose presence is proven in Hérault, is now at the heart of the debates in the commune of Grand Pic Saint-Loup. “It's a controversial subject, confirms Françoise Matheron, the mayor. Its presence does not surprise me, we already have quite a few species here. As the OFB wrote, I am not certain that it is a wolf. Whether it is a wolf, a wolfdog or a dog, it is a source of stress, but we must be able to coexist.”

A gym named after table tennis prodigy Félix Lebrun

#SAINT-CHRISTOL-LÈZ-ALÈS – A first Félix Lebrun room was christened in Saint-Christol-lèz-Alès on Saturday, December 28, in the presence of the Montpellier table tennis champion, 4th in the world and double bronze medalist at the Paris Olympic Games. A source of pride for the 18-year-old athlete. “Thank you for this wonderful recognition. It's a wonderful gift that allows me to close this exceptional year 2024”, commented Félix Lebrun on the social network X. After receiving the National Medal of Merit at the age of 18, Félix received the Medal of Saint-Christol-lez-Alès on December 29, a town where he had made a name for himself at the age of 10.

Today's figure: 7,000

LOZÈRE – It is not widely known, but the department stands out for the density of its network of hiking trails. Lozère has some 7,000 km of marked trails that the French Hiking Federation makes a point of maintaining throughout the year. And to develop, with particular attention to the risk of saturation and the implementation of sustainable developments, in partnership with the League for the Protection of Birds.
