The Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) claims that since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7, it has received reports of 16 hate crimes primarily targeting the Jewish community.

The SPVM specifies that as of Wednesday, eleven days after the start of the war in the Middle East, it had received information reporting 12 hate crimes against the Jewish community in the metropolis – including one during x27;a demonstration – and four hate crimes against the Arab or Muslim communities.

The SPVM claims that during the same period, there were also 13 hate incidents against the Jewish community and seven against Arabs or Muslims.

The hate incidents are described by police as acts that are not criminal but can undermine citizens' sense of security, including the distribution of offensive material, insults and hurtful gestures.

Spokeswoman Mélanie Bergeron indicated in an email that the SPVM is responding to the current climate of war in the Middle East by being more visible around places of worship and other places frequented by various communities.
