The thinnest iPhone ever is getting closer and we have new information on its dimensions

Are you tired of the iPhone's design?? That's understandable, since the Cupertino company hasn't made any major changes to the design of its smartphones in recent years. However, for some time now, rumors have been circulating about the development of a completely innovative model in this field, which would be planned for 2025. This device would be called the iPhone 17 Air and compared to the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max, this one should have a very different design.

Indeed, on the Air model, Apple would prioritize design and finesse, even if it has to make huge concessions in terms of the technical sheet. And while waiting for the release of this device in the fall of 2025, new information is circulating about the dimensions that this iPhone 17 Air could have. In a recent article, Mark Gurman, journalist at Bloomberg, indicates that the iPhone 17 Air would have a thickness that would be less than that of the iPhone 16 Pro by almost 2 millimeters.

The iPhone 17 Air would therefore have a thickness of approximately 6.3 millimeters, and would be thinner than the iPhone 6, which had a thickness of 6.9 millimeters. This would already be an achievement for an iPhone. However, the thinnest Apple product would remain the 11-inch iPad Pro 2024, which has a thickness of 5.3 millimeters.

A feat possible thanks to Apple's efforts on 5G

One of the components that would help make the iPhone 17 Air thinner would be Apple's 5G modem. Currently, iPhones use Qualcomm modems. But for years, the firm has been trying to develop its own 5G modems. And according to Mark Gurman, the company would start using the modems designed in-house on certain products, in 2025. The Apple 5G modem would equip the iPhone SE 2025, as well as the future iPhone 17 Air. On the latter, the modem would benefit from better integration with the other components of Apple, which would save space, and design a thinner device.

On the other hand, it is possible that the iPhone 17 Air will have poorer connectivity compared to other iPhones that use Qualcomm modems. Indeed, while Apple’s 5G modem may have advantages in terms of design and energy efficiency, it could still have shortcomings compared to Qualcomm’s modems. For example, it is rumored that the first version of Apple’s 5G modem may not support mmWave technology, which nevertheless allows for better performance on 5G.

As usual, since this information does not come from an official source, it should be considered with caution. However, it should be noted that Mark Gurman is considered one of the most reliable unofficial sources of information about future Apple products.

  • According to many rumors, Apple will release an iPhone 17 Air in 2025
  • This model would offer an innovative design and would be the thinnest iPhone ever created
  • According to an article by Mark Gurman on Bloomberg, this model would be thinner than the iPhone 16 Pro by about 2 millimeters
  • The use of Apple's 5G modem, instead of those of Qualcomm, would contribute to this reduction in thickness
