Since this year, Apple has become a player in the field of augmented reality, after the launch of its Vision Pro headset. Thus, the Cupertino company is now in competition with Mark Zuckerberg's Meta group in this sector. And soon, it will also be with Samsung and Google.

As a reminder, last year, during the presentation of its high-end smartphones, Samsung announced a collaboration with Google and Qualcomm, to develop a mixed reality product. And if at the moment we do not know when this product will be marketed, we will know more about this new platform in May.

As you may already know, every year, Google organizes an I/O conference for developers in May. The 2024 edition of this event is scheduled for May 14. And, in a publication on X, Google also indicated that it will make announcements related to augmented reality. The firm did not give further details, but it is very likely that it will take advantage of its I/O conference to lift the veil on its new augmented reality platform. In addition, some media even think that Samsung could invite itself to this Google event to lift the veil on its Vision Pro competitor. But, as usual, since this is only speculation, caution remains in order.

The Qualcomm chip has already been presented

In any case, the chip that will equip the future augmented reality headset from Samsung and Google is already known. In January, Qualcomm introduced its new Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip for virtual reality and augmented reality products. In its announcement, the American company indicated that this component will be used by Samsung and Google.

Compared to the XR2 Gen 2 announced in 2023, this new component benefits from a 15% increase in GPU frequency and a 20% increase in CPU frequency. The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 will also be capable of displaying 4.3 K resolution at 90 fps, and operating 12 cameras at the same time.

“We are delighted that the Android ecosystem will benefit from the capabilities of the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 and enable new experiences”, had, moreover , Google said, in January.

  • At the beginning of 2023, Samsung announced a collaboration with Google and Qualcomm on a new augmented reality platform
  • We should learn more about this Android competitor to Vision Pro during the conference Google I/O, in May
  • For its part, Qualcomm has already presented the Snapdragon chip which will be used by this new platform
