“The works on the Cadereau will increase other risks”: in Nîmes, the collective of residents and users of the Guiu square are still mobilized

While the Agglo Nîmes Métropole has indicated that it has revised its copy regarding Guiu Square, the Collective of local residents and users of this place believes that the impact of the work of the Cadereau for flood prevention will have an impact on the soil and vegetation. A friendly moment is planned for Sunday, February 2 to take stock.

The Collectif riverains et usagers du square Guiu is organizing a friendly event this Sunday, at 2 p.m., in the same place “before the construction machinery arrives” this Monday, February 3. The collective considers that the work on the Cadereau des Limites will help combat flooding “but will increase other risks” such as the effects of the heatwave.

Request to the administrative court

These residents have thus filed a preliminary request with the administrative court of Nîmes on August 4, 2024 in order to request the cancellation of the order under emergency procedure and establishing a public utility easement relating to the conservation of a hydraulic structure.

A request that has remained unanswered to this day. The tunnel boring technique was chosen for this project. “These works will result in the loss of trees with higher branches, and a restitution on stabilized ground”, indicates the collective which evokes for the Guiu square “a maladaptation”. The local residents are contesting the classification as a public utility easement and are opposed to the earthworks of the site without a prior study on the impacts (climate, pollution, social, biodiversity, heritage, soils).

They are asking to shift the funneling and the initiation of the well by a few hundred meters downstream, to preserve the square, its trees and its soil “to better receive the runoff water from rue de la Posterle, rue Folco Baronelli and rue Baptiste Bonnet, not recovered in the current plan.” An online petition has collected more than 300 signatures.

As a reminder, the Agglo Nîmes métropole has indicated that it has modified its projects to impact the vegetation of the square as little as possible. The work base will thus be shifted further to the right of the square.
