The planet Mars is very close to Earth on January 16, 2025. After which, the red planet will no longer be observable under such conditions before 2035. We explain.

Mars: the red planet, Ares, the object of fantasies, stories, research and scientific rivalries will fade in our sky for 10 years. Tonight, enjoy the last hours of our gigantic neighbor in ideal observation conditions.

96 million kilometers away

The specialized site Stelvision explains that on January 16, the red planet will be in the best possible place to be able to contemplate it from France. It will be at a maximum height of 65 to 70 degrees above the horizon, enough to allow us to see it with very little disturbance from atmospheric turbulence.

It will even be possible to see some details on its surface, the site states. The last time such conditions were met was in 2018. Mars was then 57.7 million kilometers from Earth, but was much lower on the horizon. Conversely this year, it is further away – 96 million kilometers – but will be much higher in our sky. Then, we will have to wait until 2035 to have such favorable conditions.

How to observe it ?

“Mars appears as a bright, red-tinted star. Also, you just need to have an idea of the direction where to look, and it is easily found thanks to its brightness”, note Stelvision.

Tonight, it will be quite possible to observe Mars with the naked eye. All you have to do is move away from the sources of light, and look towards the east, where the planet is passing through Cancer again on its way to Leo.
