These little mobile games that generate billions of dollars

While many people are wondering about the future of console video games, with this trend towards “all dematerialized“, the mobile video game market continues to rack up records. Indeed, if Apple has failed in this same market by playing the high-end gaming card with quality (but overpriced) ports like Resident Evil or Death Stranding, on its latest products, some publishers are raking in millions of dollars, with “small mobile games“.

The mobile game that generated the most revenue in 2024 is (probably) not the one you think…

Indeed, in 2024, no fewer than ten mobile video games, intended for our smartphones and tablets, generated more than a billion dollars in revenue worldwide. According to Sensor Tower, in 2023, only two mobile games had managed to generate such revenue, and we are therefore in a record year.

And contrary to what one might believe, the most “dollars friendly mobile game” of 2024 is not Robox, nor even Candy Crush Saga, but a certain … Monopoly Go!. Indeed, this mobile version of the famous board game launched in 1935 has generated no less than 2.5 billion dollars in 2024. The latter is ahead of the game Honor of Kings, credited with 2.4 billion dollars, and Royal Match, with its 2 billion dollars.

Behind, no other game manages to exceed this symbolic milestone of double billion dollars, since the title Roblox occupies fourth place, with “only” 1.7 billion in revenue. In 2024, the Roblox publisher announced no less than 88.9 million daily active users, or as many users able to spend money to buy Robux, the game's virtual currency (and a practice that greatly displeases the UFC-Que Choisir association and the CLCV).

In the rest of the ranking, we find Last War: Survival, but also Candy Crush Saga, Whiteout Survival, Coin Master, Dungeon & Fighter Mobile, and finally PUBG Mobile, with 1.1 billion dollars generated. Note that the game Dungeon & Fighter Mobile, published (like so many others) by Tencent, was launched in the summer of 2024, which did not prevent it from generating a little over a billion dollars in a few months.
