Today, we have many tools to stay in shape. Smartwatches offer very precise measurements of your physical activity. And if you don’t have a smartwatch or a fitness bracelet, you can just keep your smartphone in your pocket, since it can count your steps. However, if that’s not enough to motivate you, an iOS app called Steppin gives you another good reason to move: it prevents you from using social networks, to which you are probably addicted, if you don’t take enough steps during the day.

This original application was created by Paul English, co-founder of the comparison site Kayak, which was acquired for $1.8 billion by Priceline in 2013. How it works: The user selects the applications that Steppin should restrict access to. Then, it sets up the rules to apply. For example, the user can indicate that he can gain a minute of use of the restricted apps by taking 100 steps. Then, all that remains is to move. The app supports iPhone sensors, but can also work with connected accessories.

Combining digital well-being and physical activity

The features and applications against smartphone addiction already exist. And the App Store is also full of applications designed to encourage users to exercise or just walk. However, the originality of Paul English's application lies in the fact that it combines these two objectives. Quoted by TechCrunch, he indicates that the idea came to him while he was on vacation in Spain. With his family, he noticed that even if they were in a place with beautiful landscapes, they could not stop using their smartphones constantly.

Currently, Steppin is free. However, its developer reportedly plans to offer an annual subscription. Otherwise, other features are also expected to arrive. For example, Steppin aims to allow users to save minutes by doing other activities, such as yoga classes.

  • Kayak co-founder launches Steppin app
  • It combines digital well-being and physical activity by blocking apps unless the user takes steps
  • The goal is to help people fight against a sedentary lifestyle, while reducing the use of social networks
