This is why Orange is disconnecting many municipalities from the ADSL network as of today.

For several (long) years now, the various operators have been doubling down on 8217;efforts to install the one we are waiting for feverishly to be able to install when you arrive in a new home: “fiber“. With speeds up to 100 times greater than the ADSL network, and better general stability, fiber (but beware of scams!) is an obvious choice for Internet users, as well as for access providers. Even though it has served many French people for decades, the copper network is more sensitive to the vagaries of the weather, humidity and is more energy-intensive than optical fiber.

The ADSL network dismantling operation is underway!

Also, the operator Orange will begin, today, a vast project to dismantle the ADSL network. A project that will extend until 2030, and which should represent no less than 1 million copper cables to be recovered and recycled. Colossal works to say the least, which will affect no fewer than 162 municipalities in France this Friday, January 31.

Of course, for the vast majority of customers, this operation is far from being any kind of surprise. Orange has in fact been preparing minds (and the migration) for about 3 years now.

In addition to the necessary anticipation, the French operator indicates that it has also used various commercial partnerships to best support customers towards an alternative solution, but that “it was a painstaking job to decommission the network“. Orange of course mentions the case of the oldest, loyal to their ADSL subscription, and who had to be convinced to migrate to fiber.

For Orange, this dismantling is essential, from a technical point of view on the one hand, since ADSL is in free fall and more than 9 out of 10 French people are now eligible for fiber. Added to this is an ecological (and economic) dimension, since it is a network of a million kilometers that is falling asleep, and there is no point in keeping it.

As for the calendar, from the year 2026 (i.e. next year), no operator will be able to offer its customers an XDSL (ADSL, SDSL, VDSL) or a telephone subscription using the copper network. Finally, from 2030, offers on copper technology will no longer exist in France.

For Internet users concerned, and still subscribed to the ADSL network, their operator is required to send them a letter explaining how and when this change will take place in their municipality. From there to knowing if the famous “T” will become a collector's item in the coming years…
