This social network is similar to Instagram, but it is decentralized: what does that mean ?

Decentralized platforms have been getting a boost lately, as some alternatives to Elon Musk’s social network X, like Bluesky or Mastodon, are decentralized. However, there is also a decentralized alternative to Instagram, for posting photos. Its name is: Pixelfed. If this platform (which most of you have never heard of before) has been in the news recently, it is because it was recently blocked by the company Meta.

Specifically, the group, which includes Instagram, reportedly blocked links to the social network Pixelfed, citing community standards. But the good news is that this is not an attempt to censor a competitor. Cited by Engadget, a Meta representative said that this was an error and that links to the Pixelfed social network will be restored. But, in any case, this incident gave visibility to this social network.

Pixelfed: a mix of Mastodon and old Instagram?

Pixelfed uses the decentralized ActivityPub protocol, which is also used by Mastodon, which means that it is interoperable with other platforms that rely on this protocol. In other words, a Pixelfed user will be able to follow a Mastodon user, or even like and comment on posts sent from Mastodon.
However, while platforms like Mastodon or Bluesky (which uses a different protocol) are positioned as competitors to the old Twitter, Pixelfed is a photo-sharing social network, like the old Instagram.

Available on the web and on Android (the iOS app is in the testing phase), Pixelfed allows you to share photo albums and Stories, and even includes a messaging service.

And as the platform is decentralized, it allows you to join a server or host your account on your own server. According to Pixelfed, the social network's servers have a total of 317,000 users, who have already posted 136 million photos.

  • Recently, Meta admitted that he accidentally blocked links to Pixelfed, a decentralized social network similar to Instagram
  • Pixelfed uses the same protocol as Mastodon, but it specializes in photo sharing
  • The app allows you to share photos and stories, and allows you to follow Mastodon users
