A former NASA engineer, YouTuber Mark Rober has over 60 million subscribers. A few days ago, this science popularization specialist announced a completely crazy project: launching a satellite into space to allow Internet users to have their selfies in space, with the Earth in the background. “One small step for humanity, one giant leap for your selfies”, he writes.
According to The Verge, this project is being carried out in partnership with Google and the American operator T-Mobile. The satellite will be launched by SpaceX in January 2025, and will then start taking selfies a few months later. It includes a Google Pixel smartphone, which will display the selfies sent by Internet users, and a camera that will take a photo of this selfie with the Earth in the background. And if the user indicates the location of their home, the satellite will wait until it is above this location to take the photo, which will make the experience even more fun.
Unfortunately, to enjoy this unique experience, you will need to obtain a code. The codes are provided to subscribers of CrunchLabs, an organization that offers engineering kits for children and founded by Mark Rober, and to those who become sponsors on this platform. T-Mobile will also offer codes to its customers. And according to The Verge, codes will also be available to Google Pixel customers.

A very interesting video
In any case, the communication operation is successful, since this operation allows CrunchLabs to promote its products. But that's not all, since Mark Rober's video also explains, in a fairly simple way for the general public, the satellite design process, the launch, as well as how the satellite will operate once it is in space.
So, if you’ve ever wondered how satellites work and what’s inside them, you can watch the video until the end. It’s extremely interesting. Regarding Mark Rober’s satellite, it has a selfie-taking device (a Google Pixel smartphone and a camera), and a backup device that will deploy if there’s a problem with the first smartphone. The video details the protection device that was put in place to ensure that the Google Pixel survives in space.
