The time change is once again in our diaries. This weekend we switch to Daylight Saving Time. But faced with this deadline, a question persists in the minds of many French people: will we move our watches forward or backward this time ?
The switch to summer time, first introduced in 1976 following an oil crisis, aims to optimize the use of natural light and to achieve energy savings. This Saturday evening, just before diving into the arms of Morpheus, you will have to remember an important gesture: advance your watch by one hour. So at 2 a.m. on Sunday it will actually be 3 o'clock.
Although this change “steals& ;#8221; an hour of sleep, it promises in return to prolong our sunny evenings. A small sacrifice for a big benefit at the heart of our spring and summer days.
This measure, although anchored in our way of life for several decades, has not always been unanimously accepted. Indeed, the main goal of this initiative was to best match human activities with natural lighting to minimize the use of artificial energy. The Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) reported in 2010 a saving of 440 GWh energy thanks to the time change from the previous year.

Specialists point out the disruptions that these transitions can cause to our internal biological clock, affecting sleep, hormonal rhythm, and by extension, our general well-being. Faced with these considerations, the European Parliament adopted a project in 2019 aimed at putting an end to this practice. But recent global events, such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, have put this topic on hold, postponing any final decision until a later date.
Despite the controversies, the time change remains a tradition anchored in the agenda of many countries around the world, including throughout the European Union , Canada, the United States, and Morocco. This weekend, by moving our watches forward, we not only embrace an extra hour of light in the evening but we also participate, perhaps for the last times, in a collective ritual of seasonal passage.
