Tinder: why dating apps make us addicted

On dating apps, there are users who get tired of ghosting or the lack of discussions. But there are others who are totally addicted and constantly scrolling their screen. In the United States, a class action was initiated to ask Match Group (Tinder, Hinge, The League) to be held accountable for the potentially addictive design of their services.

And precisely, Anastasia Hronis, researcher at the University of Technology in Sydney, was interested in this phenomenon in an article published on the site The Conversation. The psychologist doesn't beat around the bush and says that dating apps are, like many other platforms, designed to be used as much as possible and to sell certain features.

She adds: “Although dating apps are designed to facilitate contact, some people can develop an unhealthy relationship with the&#8217 ;application, constantly swiping from left to right”.

How to get out of addiction ?

To make us want to consult them, certain services would therefore act on our reward systems via dopamine. This neurotransmitter is thus capable of influencing the moment and way in which we feel pleasure and reward, underlines the specialist.

At the same time, we tend to seek out those pleasant moments to rediscover those sensations. And that’s precisely what happens when you open a dating app. Uncertainty and anticipation of the match are essential. And the author clarified that if we discovered all the profiles at once instead of going through them one by one, the excitement and anticipation of the reward would no longer be there.

Therefore, there are risks of addiction to dating applications among certain people that we must learn to detect. This is particularly the case if using the service begins to dominate your thoughts, or you spend more and more time there. The same goes if you feel bad when you can no longer use them. Finally, if a break doesn't change your excessive consumption of these platforms, it's a sign that something is wrong.

Anastasia Hronis therefore suggests stopping using dating apps for a period of time which depends on your degree of addiction. You also have to ask yourself what triggers this irrepressible need to scroll and what you could replace these moments with. As this is not always easy, and if you are struggling to resolve this problem, you may want to consider seeing a psychologist who can help you.
