Starting this Thursday, January 8, 2024, season 2 of Tokyo Vicearrives on the Max platform (the series will be broadcast on Canal+ in France next spring). While the first season had left its mark, what is this sequel worth?? This is what we will try to see by discovering the first reviews of this production.

What the series is about ?

A little reminder before getting to the heart of the matter, Tokyo Vice tells the true story of Jake Adelstein. In the 90s, this young journalist managed to get hired in the editorial staff of a prestigious Japanese newspaper. In charge of news items, his investigations begin to take him to the underbelly of Tokyo, where he investigates crimes linked to the yakuza.

According to the synopsis official season 2: “Partly inspired by American journalist Jake Adelstein's account of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, the second season of the series, filmed on location in Tokyo, takes us deeper into the city's criminal underworld as“ #8217;Adelstein (Ansel Elgort) realizes that his life and that of his loved ones are in terrible danger.”

What are the critics saying about season 2 ?

Season 2 has very respectable scores on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic at at the time of writing: 85% and 79. The Daily Beast particularly liked this sequel: < em>“Once again, the charismatic duo Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe, playing unlikely partners in a war that no one seems able to win, remains one of the most fascinating and most underestimated on TV”.

Same story with our colleagues from Collider :

The first five episodes of the 10-episode season feature massive action that eliminates a major player and shakes up the universe of the series in a way that propels the season into what should be an exciting second part.

The critic Roger Ebert liked it a little less, he underlines thus: “If the characters were all more careful, the main problem of Tokyo Vice remains intact: the series doesn't know what it wants to be….

For our part, we can't wait to watch this sequel. We really enjoyed season 1 as we explained in this article: “The interweaving between the yakuzas, the local police, and a press unaccustomed to questioning the established order is meticulously shown in the series. The young hero breaks local codes and customs, which greatly displeases his interlocutors, but also fascinates them”. An appointment is therefore made for this sequel which promises to be captivating.
