True Detective: why season 4 has everything to please fans of the series ?

In 2022, the announcement of a return of True Detective somewhat surprised observers. The HBO detective series will therefore make its return on January 14, 2024 with Oscar winner Jodie Foster in the title role. At his side, we will have the pleasure of meeting Kali Reis, a professional boxer who will play his partner for the investigation.

HBO has already provided us with an official synopsis of this new part:

When the long winter night falls on Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who manage the Tsalal Arctic research station disappear without a trace. To solve the case, detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) must confront the darkness they carry within them, and dig into the haunted truths buried beneath the eternal ice.

For the rest, we don't know much about the story, but according to Vanity Fair, it seems to be inspired by a real event that occurred in 1959 in the USSR where nine high-level hikers were found dead in an inexplicable manner. Many theories were then cited: espionage, and even supernatural monsters.

Why we can believe in it ?

The first trailer also gives us a glimpse of a Nordic atmosphere with its snowy expanses, and the first elements of the investigation. The atmosphere also promises to be dark and we know that in certain regions of Alaska, night can last several days (or even more) in winter. The plot can therefore suggest a long-term hunt for a serial killer by repeating the DNA of the first three seasons. Enough to delight fans of the genre.

These first images also show a very tense climate between the two investigators, and Evangeline Navarro even says to her teammate: “You think I want to work with you ? Look in the mirror. No one can stand you.” We also remember that the relationships between Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams, or even Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff were initially not in good shape.
