Former US President Donald Trump appealed Monday, as he announced, his conviction by New York civil courts to at least $355 million in fines for financial fraud within his real estate empire.
This appeal, filed Monday with the New York Supreme Court, also targets the ban imposed on February 16 on Mr. Trump and his two adult sons Donald Jr. and Eric from running businesses in the 'New York State for three years.
In the approximately 120 pages of reasons for filing an appeal, the Trump camp, represented by lawyer Alina Habba, believes that the “Supreme Court made legal and substantive errors, abused its power discretionary and went beyond her powers.”
In his judgment ten days ago, Judge Arthur Engoron, of the same court, sentenced the former President of the United States to pay $354.86 million in fines for financial fraud, and each of the two sons to four million dollars in fines.
New York State Attorney General Letitia James filed a complaint against Donald Trump in October 2022 and forced him, along with his two adult sons and their Trump Organization family group, into a civil trial for fraud, last October to January.
She later calculated that the amount of the fine including interest would amount to more than $450 million.
On her X account on Sunday evening, Ms. James revalued this amount at $464.8 million.
The former Republican tenant of the White House (2017-2021), a tycoon who shook up the democracy of the world's leading power and aims to be elected president again in November, had castigated a “totally bogus” judgment.
