Former US President Donald Trump was ordered Friday to pay US$392,638 (approximately CA$526,000) to the New York Times and journalists from the daily for legal costs after having his lawsuits dismissed.

Donald Trump had filed a complaint September 2021 against the New York Times, accusing three journalists from the daily newspaper of a devious plot to obtain its tax documents. They published an investigation in 2018 that won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize.

In May 2023, a judge in the Commercial Division of the New York State Supreme Court dismissed the real estate mogul's case and ordered him to pay costs. In a new decision rendered Friday, this judge considered the amount of attorney fees estimated by the New York Times reasonable and ordered Donald Trump to reimburse it in full.

The investigation recounted how the former promoter, who claims having made it on his own, had built his fortune. She claimed that Donald Trump had in fact received from his father, over several years, the equivalent today of 413 million US dollars (approximately CA$554 million) which would have been partly transferred by the through a shell company, allowing them to escape tax.
