Two Jewish schools in Montreal targeted by gunfire

The City of Montreal Police Department opened an investigation following shots fired at two Jewish schools, one in Côte-des-Neiges and the other in Outremont.

A school Jewish community in the Côte-des-Neiges borough, as well as another located in the neighboring borough of Outremont, in the center of Montreal, were targeted by gunfire, in night from Wednesday to Thursday.

The Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) announced that it had opened an investigation.

The first incident, authorities indicate, occurred at a school located on Deacon Road; it is students, it is specified, who discovered the impact of a bullet on the main door of the establishment, Thursday morning.

The SPVM was subsequently informed of a second incident, which also occurred during the night, approximately three kilometers from the Deacon Road school.

These two incidents occurred in a context of significant tensions between the Jewish and Palestinian communities of the metropolis, in connection with the war between Israel and Hamas.

On the sidelines of a joint announcement with the federal government on the financing of affordable housing, the Prime Minister of Quebec, François Legault, spoke of horrible, terrible events.

Mentioning at the same time the scuffle that occurred on Wednesday at Concordia University, Mr. Legault affirmed that in Quebec, it is totally unacceptable; it's zero tolerance.

I appeal to the police forces: we do not want hatred and violence in Quebec.

We will not tolerate this, he added.

The message must be clear: I understand that we see horrible scenes on television… But here we must be able to speak to each other calmly, continued the head of government, who said appeal for calm to all Quebecers.

Also as part of the joint announcement on affordable housing, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that there is a lot of fear and fear right now in the country.

What is happening in the Middle East has impacts on the mental health, well-being and moods of millions of people who who see this every night, who see this constantly on social networks. It’s astonishing, the images we are seeing! he said.

I understand that there are people who are so deeply shocked by what is happening that they feel the need to share and fuel this hatred. But that is not who we are, Quebecers, Canadians, declared Mr. Trudeau.

Like his Quebec counterpart, the head of the federal government insisted that the scenes that occurred at Concordia, or the shootings against Jewish schools, are unacceptable!

Visibly angry, Mr. Trudeau once again affirmed that hatred and violence against innocent people, because we disagree with them […], is not acceptable. has no place in Canada, anywhere.

The mayor of Montreal, Valérie Plante, wrote on social networks that anti-Semitism, like any other demonstration of hatred and violence, has no place in our society. Ms. Plante must take stock at 2 p.m., accompanied by the head of public security on the executive committee, Alain Vaillancourt, Gracia Katahwa, the mayor of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, and the deputy director of SPVM, Vincent Richer.

Finally, in a reaction published online, Federation CJA, which claims to represent the Jewish community of Montreal, affirmed that the incidents represent a clear escalation of the anti-Semitism that the Jewish community has suffered since October 7.

During its own press conference on Thursday afternoon, the Federation maintained, through a spokesperson, that the SPVM was working in collaboration with the organization to ensure the safety of our community.

Still according to the spokesperson, on Tuesday, we said that& #x27;a red line has been crossed… Today, we don't even know where we are anymore.
