Two people die in Buckingham collision

The vehicle struck Hydro-Québec poles before catching fire on Maclaren Street, in eastern Gatineau.

Two people died following a collision involving a car and Hydro-Québec poles, which occurred early Sunday morning in the Buckingham area of ​​Gatineau.

The City of Gatineau Police Service (SPVG) indicated, late this morning, that it had arrested the driver following information gathered at the scene of the collision. The latter should appear in the coming hours and will have to answer to various charges, added the SPVG in a second press release, published later in the day.

The collision occurred shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday morning near 115 Maclaren Street, a few steps from the intersection of Buckingham Avenue. A vehicle left the road, collided with Hydro-Québec poles and caught fire, police explained.

When they arrived on site, the police unfortunately noted the death of two passengers inside the vehicle, added the police force.

The collision took place shortly before 3 a.m., during the night from Saturday to Sunday, at the corner of Buckingham Avenue and Maclaren Street, in eastern Gatineau.

This road accident caused damage to three electricity poles, causing a power outage which affected up to a little more than 1,000 customers in the Buckingham sector, Hydro-Québec confirmed to Radio- Canada. Electricity was restored to the majority of affected customers late in the morning.

Several streets in the area were closed to traffic during the day on Sunday due to this road accident.

A lot of information was collected and several witnesses were met by investigators, police said.

Nevertheless, the SPVG is asking residents and merchants in the area to send it images or any additional information that could help it in the investigation.

Between 2:30 a.m. and 3 a.m. on the morning of October 8, the vehicle allegedly traveled on Georges Street, from from the intersection of chemin Filion to rue Maclaren, then on rue Maclaren to the location of the collision (115, rue Maclaren), declared the SPVG. p>

The vehicle involved is believed to be a blue Toyota Corolla make and model car.

The investigation continues.
