The plane had to make an emergency landing in Nigeria after a sudden drop in altitude on the night of Friday 24 to Saturday 25 January 2025.
Four passengers and two crew members on a United Airlines Boeing were injured Friday night during a flight from Lagos, Nigeria, to Washington, D.C., CNN reports .
The Boeing 787, which was carrying 245 passengers, suffered a “technical problem” causing a “unexpected movement”, the American company said. According to data from FlightRadar24, the plane suddenly lost altitude about an hour and a half after takeoff, forcing the crew to make an emergency landing in Lagos.
On social networks, videos published by passengers show meal trays and various objects scattered on the floor of the cabin, testifying to the violence of the shakes.
Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. The six people hospitalized were able to return to their hotels, where the company has accommodated the passengers while they waited for re-routing on other flights.
United Airlines said the incident “is not related to turbulence”. The company added that it is “working with the aviation authorities in the United States and Nigeria to understand the cause”, while the investigation is just beginning.
