An attack that occurred this Wednesday morning on Bourbon Street, one of the most touristic streets in New Orleans, Louisiana, reportedly left many victims when the driver of a car drove into the crowd, before opening fire and exchanging gunfire with the police, according to American media.

According to the official website of the New Orleans city hall, at least ten people were killed in this attack and thirty seriously injured.

Several bloodied bodies on the ground

“We are responding to a mass casualty accident involving a vehicle that drove into a crowd on Canal and Bourbon Street. There are 30 injured and ten dead,” the city said. The injured were taken to the city's five hospitals.

Videos shot on the scene and posted on Twitter, some particularly difficult, show the bloodied bodies of several victims on the ground, while gunshots can be heard in the background and armed soldiers run through the streets.

Units deployed to secure the area

Others indicate that the area has been completely isolated by the police. According to the city, units have been deployed to secure the area, and the public is advised to avoid the neighborhood.

It is not yet known what happened to the assailant or why he committed the act.

Bourbon Street is located in the French Quarter of New Orleans, which is very popular with tourists, and many people were there late on New Year's Eve, especially since a major American football match that was to be held on January 1 at the Caesar Superdome had also attracted thousands of spectators.
