Lidl France employees can't take it anymore and they intend to make it known. Five major unions (qCFTC, CGT, CFDT, FO-FGTA and SNCDD CFE-CGC) have decided to strike hard by calling on the 46,000 employees to go on a general and unlimited strike starting this Friday. The spark that lit the fuse? The failure of the mandatory annual negotiations (NAO) on wages as well as a plan for general opening on Sundays.
The malaise had been brewing for a long time in the aisles of Lidl. Last December, the Central Social and Economic Committee was already sounding the alarm. It pointed out an alarming deterioration in working conditions. The reduction in the group's payroll has created a domino effect: the remaining employees are overwhelmed by a workload that has become unsustainable. Lidl's management, which has made a spectacular upgrade of its offering in recent years, seems to have neglected the well-being of its troops. The departure of Michel Biero, vice-president and architect of this transformation, scheduled for early March, adds a layer of uncertainty to an already explosive situation.

The brand's leading union is favouring dialogue and refusing to join the strike movement. A position that is causing some teeth to grind within the inter-union, determined to win its case on salary demands and Sunday working. Will this extremely tense situation have an impact on the operation of the stores? ? For the time being, it is difficult to know. The scale of the mobilization will determine the number of employees involved in this unlimited strike, and therefore the number of establishments impacted.
For several years, these strike movements have had a hard time lasting over time. The unions' war chest is not always enough to compensate for the financial losses of striking employees. Also, in a complicated economic context, work eventually resumes, sometimes with the conclusion of an agreement, sometimes not. The management of Lidl France has not yet commented on the announced strike. She also did not indicate whether she was open to dialogue with the unions about their demands.
