Autonomous surgical robots are not new, and they are even progressing very quickly thanks to the contributions of artificial intelligence. Perceptive, a start-up specializing in this field, has just announced the success of the very first fully automated dental surgery.

Their robot, combining the power of AI and 3D imaging, may be the precursor to a new era in medicine. However, this era is not without raising certain questions, particularly concerning the future of jobs and medical ethics.

A robot of extreme precision

According to the company, their robot already surpasses the capabilities of a dentist, since it is capable of placing crowns in 15 minutes. An intervention that normally requires two visits of about an hour.

Their dentist robot uses OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) scanners, a medical imaging technology generating 3D models of the areas on which it must intervene. By using the results of the scans, the robot thus has a very precise vision of the oral cavity.

This innovation promises not only to significantly shorten the duration of interventions, but also to minimize the risks of errors inherent in human intervention. In addition, the imaging technique used is distinguished by its ability to detect cavities with a reliability greater than 90%, while freeing itself from the ionizing radiation specific to conventional X-rays.

Perceptive sees this automation as a real turning point in the field of dental care. Practitioners could thus increase their patient base while guaranteeing optimal efficiency and quality of care. However, nothing is decided yet.

To date, the robot has only treated one patient in Colombia, and the company has yet to publish a peer-reviewed study to corroborate these promising results. Even more important: Perceptive must obtain approval from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), a process which , according to estimates by Chris Ciriello, CEO of the company, could extend over a period of approximately five years.

Impact and controversies&amp ;nbsp;: the future of dental care

Perceptive's funding, amounted to a tidy sum of 30 million dollars, comes from prestigious investors, including Dr. Eduard Zuckerberg, father of the famous Mark Zuckerberg.

The latter asserts with conviction that the automaton was designed to operate safely even in conditions where the patient moves a lot. This unwavering faith in technology illustrates a growing trend towards automated medical solutions, which can significantly reduce human intervention.

Nevertheless, this prospect raises legitimate questions about the future of employment in the medical field and the role of humans in such delicate acts. It is possible to see this as a very promising step forward, as well as a clear path towards an excessive dependence on technology, to the detriment of precious human skills. From a purely technical point of view, however, the success of Perspective's robot is nevertheless very impressive.

  • Perceptive, a start-up, has developed an autonomous dental robot that successfully performed its first surgery on a living patient.
  • This technology could reduce human error, increase the capacity of dental practices and provide better quality care.
  • The automation of dental surgery nevertheless raises questions about the future of employment in the medical sector.
