Uncultured, withdrawn… The stereotypes surrounding video games and gamers are still deeply rooted in people's minds. To go beyond preconceived ideas, the Syndicat des Éditeurs de Logiciels de Loisirs (SELL) commissioned a study from Médiamétrie. The idea is to find out the major trends in gaming in France in 2024, with some very surprising figures.
The first lesson from this survey is to what extent video games are massively played, and this in all social strata of the population. Thus, there are 38.3 million players aged 10 and over in France and 52% of the population plays at least once a week.
It is also a gender-balanced leisure activity with 51% men and 49% women among gamers. Finally, all age groups are concerned: 95% of children (10-17 years old), 66% of adults (18 years old and over) and 43% of seniors (65 years old and over). The average player is 39 years old.
76% of regular gamers play sports at least once a month (70% for the entire population). Similarly, 71% say they read frequently (66% for the whole population) and 90% say they go to the cinema at least once a month (85% for the whole population).
200% Deposit Bonus up to €3,000 180% First Deposit Bonus up to $20,000The last cliché that this study completely calls into question is that of the player who lacks social connection. While 98% of gamers enjoy playing solo, 59% also say they play with several people (locally or online). Video games are also a way to bring the family together around a game. Thus, 71% of parents say they play occasionally with their children.
Which leads James Rebours, president of SELL, to say:
Video games are increasingly popular with the French as a great tool for social interaction: enough to sweep away the latest clichés still sometimes heard against video games.
Finally, let us remember that the benefits of gaming for mental health have already been demonstrated in previous studies. We invite you to read the rest of this very rich survey in its entirety here. Does this information surprise you?? Let us know in the comments.
