“Result of the American election: after Trump's victory, already racist excesses”

Donald Trump, elected to become the 47th President of the United States, has confirmed that he wants to organize a “mass expulsion” of immigrants, which is causing concern in some southern states. Just a few days after his victory, a racist SMS campaign is also targeting African-Americans.

The essentials:

  • Donald Trump, who will become the next President of the United States next January, has reaffirmed one of his priorities: to proceed with “mass expulsions” of immigrants as soon as he takes office. A promise that is already raising concerns, particularly in the southern states that nevertheless gave the Republican victory.
  • Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election has been followed by a racist text message campaign targeting African-Americans since Wednesday, November 6. Messages calling racialized people slaves and calling on them to work in cotton fields have been sent in several states, many of which have a slave past, and sometimes signed by a “Trump voter”.
  • In terms of international politics, Vladimir Putin ended up congratulating the future leader of the USA and said he was “ready” to resume contact. Donald Trump believes that an exchange will take place shortly. At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to call for continued US support for Ukraine and says he does not know the Republican's plan to end war, but he plans to make “no concessions.”
  • The results of the American presidential election are still awaited in two states: Nevada and Arizona. But Donald Trump is expected to win these territories and their electorate. He already has 295 votes out of the 270 needed to be re-elected to the White House. The Republicans also win the Senate and could have a majority in the House of Representatives.

09:31 – An upcoming exchange between Trump and Putin ?

Donald Trump, who has already spoken with several international leaders, has not yet spoken with Vladimir Putin. But the Republican intends to talk with the Russian president, as he indicated during an interview on NBC: “I think we're going to talk.” The Russian president, for his part, said he was “ready” to resume relations with the Republican. Donald Trump has promised to end war between Russia and Ukraine if he were to become President of the United States again, but given his admiration and sympathy for Vladimir Putin and his previous criticism of aid to Ukraine, this does not seem to be good news for Kiev.

08:44 – Donald Trump on the verge of passing the 300 electorate mark

Several American media outlets including CNN, CBS News and the BBC are announcing Donald Trump's upcoming victory in Nevada, one of the two states where the results of the presidential election are still awaited. The Republican is in the lead with more than 2 points ahead of Kamala Harris on 96% of the ballots counted according to the AP news agency. Donald Trump is therefore preparing to win 6 additional electors and concentrate 301 votes. Nevada is the sixth of the seven swing states to deliver victory to Donald Trump. All that's missing is victory in Arizona to achieve the swing states' grand slam.

08:17 – Racist SMS campaign targets African-Americans

Since Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election, several racist text messages have been sent to African-American people in several US states, following Donald Trump's election. The NAACP, an advocacy organization for the rights of African-Americans, reports that black residents in North Carolina, Virginia, Alabama and Pennsylvania have received messages asking them to “run for a plantation to pick cotton,” referring to America's slave-owning past. “The sad reality of having elected a president who has historically embraced, and sometimes encouraged, hate speech is playing out before our eyes,” lamented Derrick Johnson, head of the NAACP.

The author or authors of these messages are not known, but the federal police (FBI) assure that they are “aware” of this campaign of racist SMS messages which is the subject of an investigation. But other equally racist messages sent more specifically to African-American students in several states are signed by “a Trump supporter”. They can be read: “You have been selected to be a house slave at Abingdon Plantation.

08:05 – Trump confirms that "mass evictions" of migrants are its priority

Donald Trump is preparing for his inauguration as president in January and he assured NBC News on Thursday night that one of his priorities would be to make the border “strong and powerful.” He said he had “no choice” but to carry out mass expulsions of migrants, promising that this measure would be “priceless.” A very tough speech on immigration that the Republican considers as one of the reasons for his victory: [Americans] want to have borders, and they like people to come in, but they have to come with love for the country. They must enter legally.”

How American elections work ?

The American electoral system is complex. It is based on an indirect system where citizens do not directly elect their president, but electors who then meet to choose the head of state. This “electoral college” has 538 members, corresponding to the total number of senators and representatives in Congress, as well as three electors for the District of Columbia. Each state has a certain number of electors, allocated according to the size of its population.

In the presidential election, which takes place every four years, citizens vote in early November. The candidate who wins a majority of the votes in a state, under the “winner-takes-all” rule, wins all of the electors in that state, except for Maine and Nebraska, which apportion their electors proportionally. The candidate who wins at least 270 electors wins the presidential election.
