Discover live the result of the pre-election ;American residential on the map of the United States, with the scores of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in each state…
The American elections, which were set for this Tuesday, November 5, 2024 in the United States, will begin to reveal their results. The first polling stations on the East Coast closed their doors around midnight French time and the scores will come back from each state throughout the night and day on Wednesday.
The American presidential election is very different from a French presidential election. It is an indirect election, by which the electors first vote to elect 538 electors, distributed in each American state and who will designate the future president of the United States. More than a score in percentage of votes to Nationally, the number of electors each candidate wins will determine whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump wins. A majority of 270 electors is needed to win the election.
The results of the American presidential election are therefore assessed according to the states won by the Democratic candidate and those won by the Republican candidate, and which will provide their electors to each of them. In the American system, winning a majority of the votes in a state means winning all of its electors, according to the “winner takes all” principle. The number of electors depends on the population density within a state. In California, for example, there are almost 39 million people and 54 electors (or more than four electors for every million inhabitants). As for states with small populations, like Alaska or Vermont, they are allowed a minimum of three electors. This can lead to a slight overrepresentation of places with fewer than a million people.
With some states already clearly won by the Democratic candidate and the Republican candidate, this 2024 presidential election is being played out in a handful of more undecided states. There are 7 “Swing States” in total: Arizona, North Carolina, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Between them, they represent 93 electors who should make a difference.

Unlike the French electoral system, Americans can vote before the election date. Introduced in 2004 to encourage voter turnout, early elections can be held weeks earlier, distance or even in person. For these elections, more than 78 million people had already voted for one of the presidential candidates, or one in three voters.
&Added to this are postal votes, which often take longer than D-Day votes to be counted. In the 2020 presidential election, 65.64 million ballots were mailed, a record compared to other years. Since then, the practice has not stopped and could delay the deliberations, as in 2020 when Pennsylvania waited nearly three days before giving its results.
