US presidential election, live: the campaign accelerates three days before the election

Spread the love

The presidential campaign ends in three days and the candidates are not stopping. Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are making trips and holding rallies, especially in swing states, which could swing the vote.

The bottom line:

  • The polls show Donald Trump and Kamala Harris neck and neck. According to polls, the Democratic candidate would win 49% of the vote, compared to 48% for her Republican opponent.
  • As the noose tightens, Donald Trump continues to insult his opponent, as well as his supporters. A strategy that paid off in 2016.
  • Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will both be in North Carolina on Saturday. The Democrat will then travel to Atlanta and its opponent in Virginia.

16:50 – Record turnout for early voting in Georgia

Americans can vote before November 5th, and many have already done so. In Georgia, 60% of voters have already cast their ballots. Early voting prevents polling stations from being congested. This had been the case in many Georgia polling stations where results had been contested. The residents of this state have learned their lesson and, although we do not know the trend, we already know that women are the most numerous to have voted early and that they overwhelmingly support Kamala Harris.

16:38 – Washington barricades itself in anticipation of the results

57% of voters fear violence if Trump is defeated, 31% if Kamala Harris loses, according to a poll relayed by the Washington Post. In Washington, residents are worried. Some are barricading themselves and protecting their stores and homes. They are still traumatized by the January 7, 2021 storming of the Capitol. Washington State Democratic Governor Jay Inslee even announced that he was asking the National Guard to remain on alert during the week following the election.

16:28 – Democrats want to appeal to big cities

Kamala Harris is holding two rallies on Saturday. She will be in Atlanta, Georgia, then in Charlotte, North Carolina. The vice president is always accompanied by celebrities. This time, Spike Lee, 2 Chainz and Jon Bon Jovi will be with her. Former first lady Michelle Obama will be in Philadelphia with Alicia Keys.

15:57 – Donald Trump attacks Liz Cheney, former Republican who supports Kamala Harris

Donald Trump has suggested that Liz Cheney be put in front of a firing squad, “facing nine gun barrels shooting at her.” A former Republican and daughter of former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney (2001-2009), she and her father now support Kamala Harris.

The main person concerned reacted on X, assuring that “this is how dictators destroy free nations. They threaten to kill those who speak out against them.

After such a statement, the Democratic candidate believes that “someone who wants to be president of the United States and who uses this kind of verbal violence is clearly disqualified from being president.”

15:14 – $10.5 billion has been spent on campaign ads alone

The November 5 election is crucial and not just for the presidential election. Americans will also elect their local officials. These campaigns have required astronomical sums of money, as AdImpact reveals. More than $10.5 billion was reportedly spent on advertising campaigns alone, a billion more than in 2020. Democrats spent $5 billion and Republicans $4.1 billion. The rest comes from independent candidates.

14:53 – Which stars are supporting Kamala Harris ?

The current vice-president has more glamorous supporters than her opponent. They are also much better known internationally. She was notably supported by part of the cast of the Avengers superhero film, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Don Cheadle. She also received the support of the singer Taylor Swift, whose influence is no longer to be proven in this election. We can also cite Eminem, Cardi B, Beyoncé, Ariana Grande, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Stevie Wonder, Pink Usher, Jennifer Lopez… But also actors George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Stiller, Jennifer Lawrence, Samuel L. Jackson, Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway…

14:27 – Which stars support Donald Trump ?

Candidates Harris and Trump are relying on the support of certain public figures for the election. Unlike in France, it is normal for a star to give his political opinions and call for a vote for one or the other of the candidates.

Donald Trump has received the support of Elon Musk, the billionaire who owns X (Twitter), Tesla and Space X. The other supporters of the former president are less known across the Atlantic, but can have a real impact on Americans. We can notably mention Kid Rock, Lee Greenwood or Jason Aldean. There is also Kanye West, the ex-husband of Kim Kardashian, Kodak Black, Azealia Banks or Lil Pump.

13:59 – Where are the polls in the swing states ?

13:18 – “I want your damn vote” Donald Trump slams

At his rally in Wisconsin on Friday night, Donald Trump urged Americans to vote for him. With the race looking tighter than ever, every vote counts. “I don't want a money vote, I want your damn vote. Okay ?,” the Republican candidate insisted. He continued his personal attacks on Kamala Harris, accusing her of having a “low IQ” and “hating” the Americans.

12:57 – Possible Russian interference in favor of Trump

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made a statement that could be in favor of Donald Trump. He assured, in the Turkish daily Hürriyet that “under the current president, who has pushed the spiral of Russian-speaking in the United States to the limit, our countries are on the brink of a direct military conflict.” A statement that could scare undecided Americans and who would therefore be tempted not to vote for the Democratic camp. The Russian minister warns that Russia has “no preference” between Harris and Trump: “At the time, the Trump administration had adopted the largest number of anti-Russian sanctions compared to its predecessors.”

12:20 – What does the Constitution provide in the event of a tie ?

A perfect tie between two candidates for the White House already occurred in 1800. The situation was very different today, the electors were fewer in number and did not vote in the same way, but the article of the Constitution that refers to this eventuality has not changed. In 1800, Thomas Jefferson obtained as many votes as Aaron Burr. It was the members of the House of Representatives, the equivalent of the National Assembly in France, who had to decide. After 35 rounds of voting that did not result in an absolute majority, Thomas Jefferson won.
For this election, it is still the House of Representatives that should decide. They would be gathered in a delegation of the 50 states, which makes the Republicans weigh more heavily in the balance than the Democrats. Indeed, the latter have conquered a larger population, but in very populated states. The Republicans have 26 of the 50 delegations. In addition, it is in the Senate that the vice president would be chosen. Although Democrats currently hold the majority, the November 5 election could change everything. In the event of a perfect tie, Donald Trump would have a better chance of reaching the White House.

11:45 – How the Electoral College System Works ?

The President of the United States will be elected by indirect universal suffrage. Americans will vote for electors who will choose the future tenant of the White House. There are 538 electors. To win the election, you need an absolute majority of 270 votes. As it stands for now, the election could give Kamala Harris and Donald Trump 269 electors each. A situation that is unlikely to happen. According to a calculation by the 538 site, there is a 1 in 300 chance that this scenario will come true.

11:12 – Harris and Trump neck and neck

According to an average of polls published daily by the New York Times, the gap between the two candidates is very tight. Kamala Harris would win 49% of the vote and Donald Trump 48%.

What you need to know

The American presidential election will take place on November 5, 2024 and is mainly between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris, despite the presence of a few other minor candidates in the race for the White House. The election promises to be particularly tight this year according to the various national polls or those conducted in each state. In the United States, it is the results of the state-by-state ballot that are decisive for the outcome of the election.

Each of the 50 states in the country represents a certain number of electors, the more populated the state, the greater the number of electors. It is ultimately these electors who vote for the future president of the United States. But the electors are not distributed to the Republican and Democratic camps proportionally to the results of the election, they all go to one and the same party: the one that obtained the highest score. To hope to win the presidential election, candidates must therefore win the ballot in as many states as possible to obtain the most electors possible. It is necessary to win 270 electors to be assured of victory.

The outcome of the election is already known in most American states that have very strong electoral habits: the territories on the east and west coasts are usually very progressive like California or New York and vote for the Democratic camp, those in the Midwest are rather conservative and mainly support the Republican party. But there are a handful of states, called swing states, which from one election to the next can swing from one camp to another. These are the states that decide the outcome of the election: Arizona, North Carolina, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
