The shooter opened fire at Apalachee High School in the town of Winder, 45 miles northeast of Atlanta. The school was initially placed on lockdown, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. “My teacher opened the door to see what was going on. Another teacher then ran in and told him to close the door because there was a shooter,” said 17-year-old student Sergio Caldera, quoted by ABC News. He and his classmates, who were hiding in the back of the classroom, heard screams coming from outside.
Authorities said that local, state and federal police are on site. Students have been evacuated from the school and, according to aerial images broadcast by media, gathered at the site of a sports field. Emergency services have also been deployed to treat injured students. According to AFP, quoted as by Le Parisien, there are currently around thirty of them. Nine of them are reportedly on their way to hospital, CNN reports, including several by helicopter.
