Uzy, this Brittany spaniel adopted from the SPA who is almost 23 years old near Montpellier

Uzy, un épagneul breton né en 2002, a été adoptée en décembre 2013 au refuge SPA de Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone par une bénévole qui y promène toujours les chiens, une fois par semaine.

What an exceptional longevity! Aged 22 years and 8 months, Uzy first spent happy days in a home before being abandoned at the age of eleven at the Noé shelter, in Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone. Having lost her zest for life, despite the attention lavished by the shelter staff, she stayed there for several months.

But one sunny Wednesday, a volunteer came to pick him up from his box for a walk. “A few minutes were enough for a mutual love at first sight to happen”, says Denise. “When we got back from the walk, she snuggled up in my arms”. We know the rest…

Three days later, Denise came back to adopt him. And it’s been eleven years now that the dog has been part of this loving family, where she has found her place among many older companions.

“I always adopted the dogs that were older, those that had the least chance of finding a home, says the volunteer. The shelter is not a suitable place for them, with all that noise. As soon as we take them out of the cage and arrive at the reception office to do the paperwork, they understand that their life is going to change, their eyes light up.”

“Uzy has trained several dogs that we have taken in as foster dogs. She is always very alert. When we have people over, she watches over us so we don't miss anything that's being said!”

“There are young people who are taking over”

Over the course of these eleven years, the Brittany spaniel has also ensured the education of eight puppies housed by the family. All in good harmony with the cats in the house. “The dogs we take in can then be adopted by people who have one or more cats. It's an extra chance for them.”

“I still go to the shelter once a week to walk the animals. When I started, there were only a few of us doing it. Today, there are many more of us, and there are young people who are taking over. But there are still just as many animals up for adoption.”

“Before, people abandoned them because they were going on vacation. Today, it's because they can no longer afford to maintain them or because their animals get sick. It's sad.”

In the meantime, December is Uzy's favorite month. Firstly because it's the month he arrives at his home. And secondly because the Christmas holidays are already here. A good time for adoptions!

I subscribe to read the rest
