Russia claims rebels in Syria have external support, kyiv denies
Russia said on Wednesday it strongly supports the Syrian leadership's steps to counter an offensive by rebel groups it says have received support, including drones and training, from outside the country.
“We strongly condemn this attack. There is no doubt that they would not have dared to commit such a bold act without the incitement and full support of external forces that seek to provoke a new round of armed confrontation in Syria, to unfold a spiral of violence,”, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters.
kyiv “categorically rejects Russia's unfounded accusations against Ukraine over its alleged involvement in the worsening security situation in Syria,” she added.
The rebels, some of whom are from former Soviet countries, have received drones from Ukraine and training on how to use them, Zakharova said, without providing evidence. Russia is a key ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and has been providing military support since 2015 in the country's civil war.
“We express our solidarity with the Syrian leadership,” Zakharova said. “We strongly support the efforts of the Syrian authorities to counter terrorist groups and restore constitutional order,”, she added.
